Owner of The Yoga Block, Nutritionist, Yogi and proud pet parent of Camper the overgrown Labradoodle.
After completing her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Vanessa, the Miramichi native sought out a life in Calgary , where her love for yoga, hiking and a healthy lifestyle flourished. Vanessa started envisioning a life as a yoga teacher and in 2015 she took leap of faith and followed intuition. That guiding sense lead Vanessa to complete her 200 hour Ashtanga Yoga Training at Ajarya Yoga School in the beautiful Himalayan mountains of Rishikesh, India. While studying under the Internationally recognized Swami Atma and Nagesh G. She was able to fully let go of her past and begin a life changing journey that led her back to Miramichi and to the opening of The Yoga Block.
Vanessa adores the way yoga cultivates inner peace, self- awareness and compassion for self and others. She truly believes that yoga can heal any wound - physical, mental, and emotional. Yoga is a safe space to be yourself and to show up just as you are without judgments, doubts, fears, or expectations. Vanessa takes an inviting approach to her teachings and allows students to define their own practice each time they come to their mat.
Let's take this journey together!
Occupational Therapist, dog mom, amateur renovator/decorator, yogi, eternal student, entrepreneur, karma worker
Whitney first found yoga when she needed it the most- as a busy, lost and overstressed Master’s student. Her practice began at a community-focused, accessible-to-all, yoga studio in Kingston, Ontario. She fell in love with the core beliefs and inclusivity that yoga offered. Whitney’s path has taken her to several different cities and experiences since that time. She is happy to finally settle in her hometown- the mighty, majestical, Miramichi. Whitney’s day job is working in the mental health field and she has a strong understanding and appreciation for the mind-body connection. Whitney knows first-hand how the techniques and skills taught in yoga class can translate to improvements and break-throughs in every day life.
Although not (yet) a yoga teacher, Whitney is a registered Occupational Therapist with experience working with several different client populations. Whitney is acting as our first “karma worker”. Access her at the front desk as a resource with any injury/modification questions you may have!
Make sure to give her a big warm welcome next time you see her!
We're excited to INTRODUCE Girl on Fire and wannabe celebrity chef, JENNY from the BLOCK!
"Being physically active in sports like basketball, soccer, running and boxing has always given me an outlet and helped me to develop the skills and attitudes needed when facing adversity. I learned how exercise, yoga in particular for me, can be very beneficial to a person living with Multiple Sclerosis and I am walking, yogi proof!
"Practicing yoga and being physically active has helped me both on and off the mat. I have become more resilient, brave and of course flexible. If I am physically unable to go for that run or walk: yoga and meditation are always there for me. It allows me and inspires me to live more mindfully in each moment, by simply strengthening my physical and inner balance, core and soul all at once."
Certified through Breathing Space Yoga out of Halifax, NS. Certifications in 200 hours Vinyasa Flow training (August 2017) and certified facilitator for the Girl on Fire Empowerment program (November 2016).
I spent the summer of 2017 teaching Beach Yoga along the coast of the beautiful Bay des Chaleurs in Northern NB. In addition, I have developed and offered Hike and Yoga sessions on Dalhousie Mountain, NB, incorporating the yogic elements of earth, fire, water, air and ether!
When confronted with challenges, Yoga and Meditation has guided my inner light into becoming a burning fire instead of a mere flicker."
Make sure to give her a warm welcome when you see her in class class or around the studio
Mother of three, grandmother and full time Wonder Woman
Karrie’s journey into the practice of yoga began over 20 years ago by serendipity. Often pushing and punishing her body through exercise, it was during a run one day that she stumbled across an outdoor yoga class. She felt like she had finally come home and knew yoga was something she needed to explore.
After experiencing the profound changes yoga bought to her life she wanted to share it with others. Her love of the practice and exploration of various styles led her to become a certified yoga teacher through Atlantic Yoga Teacher Training in 2007, under the guidance of the incredible Jody Myers and Silver Frith.
As a single mom of three beautiful and busy children, working multiple jobs at same time, finding time to practice was not always easy; but it was an invaluable tool for navigating life’s challenges while raising and guiding her children with an open heart. She believes in the power of yoga to ground us, connect us and build a healthy body and clear mind.
In class you can expect creative, playful and challenging flows, with a strong focus on the breath. There is an emphasis on compassion toward yourself; honouring your limitations but also testing your unlimited potential.
It’s her honour to share this practice with you.
Angie is a life loving, plant eating, bike riding, dog momma yogi. She has been practicing yoga for the past 16 years, beginning her journey while living in Vancouver. After returning to the Miramichi, she quickly realized that more yoga resources were needed here in our community and soon after became a certified Hatha Yoga Instructor. She has been sharing her love of yoga now for almost 10 years. Angie is currently studying to be an RMT and loves integrating these 2 tools that can be used to facilitate healing and help us maintain good health...mind and body. "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live." ~JR
Sherri Lynn McFarland
Yogi, athlete and badass cycler.
Sheri Lynn’s active lifestyle first guided her on the path to yoga. In the beginning, Sheri Lynn was looking for physical benefits; to lengthen and strengthen and prevent further strain on the body. Soon, she realized the many benefits of yoga, and began a self guided practice, incorporating yoga into her exercise routine. In 2016, Sheri Lynn took the leap to become a yoga teacher, enrolling with Breathing Space Yoga in Halifax NS. Upon completing her yoga teacher training, she started incorporating her knowledge into her career as a resource and physical education teacher.
She is excited to be able to offer her yoga students the gift of yoga as a means to ease their troubles, anxiety and pressures. Yoga has gotten her through some tough times, always giving her a safe place to land. This is where she learned to honour her body and breathe, and to find presence and the ability to let go. Sheri Lynn is thrilled to share this with all of you at THE YOGA BLOCK. “Yoga doesn’t take time, it gives time” ~Ganga White
Ainsley is a self proclaimed tree hugging, happy hippy, yogini, itchy-toed traveller, and mama to a crazy household.
She believes that yoga and being a little bit hippy go hand in hand as a life style, bringing compassion, empathy and connection into our daily lives. Ainsley followed her itchy toes to Rishikesh, India in June 2016, where she completed her 200hr Hatha YTT certification at Shiva Yoga Peeth. Ainsley is excited to continue sharing her love of yoga, breathing and life with the community around her.
Om on Omies!
Christine has always had energy to burn and used physical fitness to stay healthy and focussed.
After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Dalhousie University, she moved West to work in the health & medical industries.
In 2009 she found The Work of Byron Katie, which is a simple and profound process of self-inquiry. As she began questioning her mind and thoughts, she was better able to cultivate the peace and freedom she was looking for in order to live a more heart-centered, fulfilling life. It was at this time that she began to dabble with yoga.
Yoga is now her biggest teacher - asking her to love, honor and listen to her body daily. Yoga has led to an increase in inner strength, courage, patience and flexibility in her life, both on and off her mat.
She recently completed her 200-hour Vinyasa Flow and Restorative yoga certification through the Alignment Center in beautiful Bali, Indonesia.
In class, she will guide you through a strong flow designed to activate your body, slow your mind and nourish your heart.
Christine is looking forward to practicing and growing stronger together with all you beautiful Yogis to strengthen our community.
Listen to your body, know your limits and find your edge.- Christine

our newest BARRE babe on the 'block
Kate caught the fitness bug early. She started working out and reading articles about nutrition and fitness when she was in high school. Like many people who start living the “healthy lifestyle”, Kate quickly became the go-to fitness and nutrition expert for friends and family, a position and responsibility she enjoyed and cherished. . The world of fitness and exercise is getting bigger, broader and more exciting every day. Kate enjoys a new challenge and sometimes standard exercise training can begin to feel a bit repetitive. This is why she loved attending Booty Barre classes in Moncton (her hometown). It’s an amazing weave of Pilates, Ballet and Yoga but at the same time, not quite like any single one of them. When Kate heard a Barre Teacher Training was going to be available in New-Brunswick she had to take the leap because many times she had considered traveling away to attend the course. Her job brings her to Miramichi and she says she’s happy to have found an amazing studio, the Yoga Block, to continue practicing yoga and now, teach barre! Kate is beyond excited to instruct a class with knowledge, great tunes and with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
Born and raised in Miramichi, Robbie fell in love with music at an early age, writing lyrics before the age of 10, some of which he later turned into music. In 2004, Robbie moved to Montreal to pursue musical endeavours, however, it would be at that moment he would begin facing one of life's biggest challenges. In 2005 at the age of 27, Robbie was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s. (we won’t lie, we know this is a shock!!) Robbie’s battle with Parkinson’s has proven it’s challenges, however Robbie has never given up hope and has persevered though all obstacles this journey has given him.
Robbie began his yoga journey on his own in 2010 attending classes at a local YMCA in Montreal to help with muscle movement and to delay the progression of his Parkinson’s. He soon after found a studio to call home, where he later trained my as an Ashtanga yoga teacher in 2014. Robbie continued his studies under Jeanne Mudie and completed his restorative yoga training. With great focus on alignment, coupled with the use of props (bolsters, blankets, straps blocks) restorative yoga became a safe place to practice even when his body was working against him.
Robbie took a leap of faith and moved back home to Miramichi in 2016 as a way to better manage his condition and to be with family. Robbie is thankful to still be able to create and make music and to be back in a yoga studio teaching!.
“ I look forward to sharing what I have learned with you and can’t wait to see all of you! See you on the mat! “
Love is best,

Originally from Cape Breton, NS, Allison has called Miramichi home for most of her life. She is the proud mother of one amazing human, Georgia, and two beautiful fur babies, Harley & Hyde.
Allison is a change maker and spends her career working towards cultural and organizational reform within our provincial health care system.
Allison has practiced yoga for 18 years and is grateful to have practiced with a number of inspiring teachers. She regularly attends the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Massachusetts and her practice has a strong Kripalu foundation; imbedded in compassionate self-awareness without judgement, both on and off the mat. “Like many women, I spent much of my early life in a constant battle with my body; moving from fad to fad, trying to beat my body into submission to fit the cultural standard projected at me.” Learning to let go of this pattern through her yoga teachings has created a great deal of freedom and space in Allison’s life and she now approaches her body with more acceptance, compassion and grace; which reflects in her practice. “Over the years, the evolution of my yoga has moved from exercise, to a stress reduction tool, to a life line during grief and difficult times, to a place of complete self-acceptance. My mat is a sacred place.” This summer, Allison took the plunge to deepen her practice with the 200 hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training offered at The Yoga Block and is now offering Karma classes as part of her certification.
What makes her heart the happiest is family, friends, travelling and dance. Her passion for dance started at a very young age, giving her opportunities to perform, compete and attend many workshops conventions all over North America.
She is so happy she’s now finally able to share her passion of dance and her new found love of fitness in one class. She is excited to experience this journey with everyone;
whether you are a newcomer or a fitness guru. If you’re ready to try something new in a upbeat and positive environment, join her for a class @theyogablock.
She has recently been certified in Barre training. A goal of hers is to further her skills and teaching has always been her ambition. She is looking forward to this journey and encourages everyone to come out and embrace this empowering discipline.
